Need Help with the New Shelter Building

To all that may be interested: The commissioners have donated 1.54 acres of land for the New Stokes Shelter. We are getting sooooo close, it is unbelieable. What we need is: if 2000 people would donate $20, tax deductible, checks made to Shelter Building Fund, sent to SBF c/o
1020 Alamo Rd. Walnut Cove, NC 27052..
The monies would allow us to buy the building 90x40...it would allow us to put in air/heat , runs, do the kitty/puppy visitation room, do the very small office ( do not want to waste space), get gravel parking...we would be able to get it open this time next year....WOW...If it were not for Sarah Johnson at the Stokes County Animal Shelter, Mona Triplett with the Stokes County Humane Society and Candis Loy with the Animal REscue of Stokes County, none of this would be occurring.

Just like the northeast areas with Sandy the Storm, we should all be preparing our pets for winter.
Make sure outdoor pets have clean, warm, dry, draft-free housing. Make sure that the areas in front of housing are not going to become mudholes.
Indoor pets need to be checked for parasites (fleas, tapeworms etc) and make sure all pets Indoors and Outdoors are still getting their monthly Heartworm parasite prevention.

Senior Pet month

In November the Animal Hospital of Walnut Cove recognizes senior pets ( older than 5 yrs) We celebrate their lives by providing a lower cost Blood Panel during the month. The panel, like what you do at your human doctor, checks pets for Diabetese, Liver and Kidney disease. Please call to set up an apt. 

 

Our Assistants will pull a little blood, and within 20 minutes, we can give you information on your pets' health.

October is Here

Now is the time to get your outdoor pets' enviroment ready for winter. Check houses for air and water leaks, make sure you put thick new bedding down, pine shavings are much better than cedar ( resin in cedar can cause skin irritation and respiratory problems)
Make sure that water buckets are clean and easily accessible, also make sure that food buckets are clean.  A covered feeding and drinking station, close to the house really saves money ( food does not get wet)....Make sure you are providing correct housing...LEAN-tos are NOT.

So, if you have not noticed, September is Spay and Neuter month at the hospital, give us a call.

Do not forget that as October gets closer, so does Halloween,, NO NO candy for the pets.

In case you've been in a bubble, please remember it will be in the 100degrees outdoors for the next 3 days. Please make sure that neither you nor your pets have an issue with heat. Make sure there is plenty of shade, water ( that the water is fresh and kept clean.) a pool is a great idea, keep it in the shade too.
Frozen green beans or carrots are a great treat.
NOOOOO jogging, playing freezbee, ball, running...everyone will collapse.

Fleastation and ticks abound

Everyone is complaining about their flea and tick protocols, it does not seem that the products are working as well as we would like. The problem is that if you are in a rural area, you are going to have to treat the enviroment. Easier said than done.
You need to contact your termination folk, or you can try Sevin dust on the grounds.
Check in in another day or so.

Flea Prevention

Please be aware that no Flea and Tick prevention will keep all of the ticks and fleas off your pet. They have to bite the pet, so you will see them on your pet.
What you want to see is that they are dying or dead.
You also have to make sure that you are treating the enviroment, you know, the beds, the kennels, the yard, your house.
This past year was not cold enough to kill insects and therefore we are seeing more than ever.

Keep up the good job of staying untop of the enviroment.

Lyme vaccines are now available, as are the heartworm + rickettsial tests. The ticks are winning this summer war and people as well as animals are getting lotsssss of them.

Let's keep everyone safe, test and vaccinate. Call us for info.

Always remember that the doctors and staff of both human and pets want to do their best for their patients. If you help them with all the information you can give them and by allowing them to do their jobs, great things can happen.

No one is able to predict the future or how a patient will respond to a treatment, all one can do is their best.

Hospitals continued

When we talk about hospitals, it is important to remember that the doctors and staff have to be allowed to do their jobs.
Sometimes owners refuse to leave their pets, so that the correct procedures can be done. Sometimes owners want to set time limits, or constraints on how pets will be handled.  These are issues that human doctors and nurses do not have to deal with.

Sometimes the pets don't want to co-operate

sometimes there are issues that have to be addressed in unusual ways.

It helps when clients realize that an animal hospital is like a human hospital. You should not dictate what can or cannot be done. If finances are a concern, the owner can request, and is often given an estimate. The estimate is a GUESS as to what the doctor will need to do. An owner can then advice what they can afford financially.

There is pet insurance available and it may be something that owners want to check out.

What is an Animal Hospital vs. Human Hospital?

All of us think of hospitals as a place to go when you are hurt, or sick or having a health issue. That is exactly what an animal hospital does.



We do in house pathology, histology and culturing



The big difference is that we do ALL the bloodwork, the xrays, the surgeries, the medicines in one building. We don't send you all over town and we normally give you the results of your test within 24 hrs.

It is time consuming and we have to focus carefully on each of our patients.

Possums and other wildlife

Keep an eye out for possums, skunks, hawks. This is mating time and often they are not aware of vehicles. If you find a possum that has been hit, check to see if there are babies in the pouch. If you find babies, bring them to the clinic. It is of no cost and we will try to rehabilitate them.

 February is Spay/Neuter Month!

Have you been to a shelter lately? It is awful, there are so many animals with no homes, no one to love them, or provide for them. Still there are animals around here that have not been spayed or neutered. It is beneficial to prevent a litter so that less animals are homeless, sent to shelters, or being euthanized. Along with over population spaying and neuter can help your pet live longer and happier. Spaying before a female’s first heat cycle, can all but eliminate the chance of breast cancer. Neutering a male can prevent prostate problems and testicular cancer; prevent spraying, fighting with other males, and running away to find a female in heat. So, I am sure you are wondering at what age can kittens and puppies be spayed or neutered. Well the answer is as young as 12 weeks.

 In February every year we offer a discount on spaying and neutering. For your pet’s safety, we require a veterinary exam, up-to-date vaccination record, and a recent heartworm test and fecal cytology before scheduling any surgeries.
